About Rossland “It was a colourful cast of characters that settled in the crater of an ancient volcano to establish the mountain town of Rossland and mine its wealth of gold deposits in 1897. Then the third-largest city in BC, 42 saloons, four banks and 17 law firms serviced the population of 7,000. Some 115 years later, this Powder Highway town has evolved into a small but sophisticated mountain community — one of Canada’s highest at 1,023 metres (3,410 feet) above sea level.
