Our province took the stage at the Los Angeles Travel and Adventure Show, which ran from February 27-28 in Long Beach, CA. Tourism Vancouver Island, the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, Northern BC Tourism and Wendy Van Puymbroeck from Kootenay Rockies Tourism were on hand to promote BC at the event. The Los Angeles Travel and Adventure show is the largest US consumer travel show. The regions shared a booth under the Destination BC banner. At the show, British Columbia had a half hour presentation on the Destination Theatre stage. We spoke about the new Google Occular headsets and then asked the audience to identify the major gateway airports in British Columbia that could be accessed from Los Angeles and if they could answer correctly, they received their own Destination BC – Google cardboard headset. These were a hit with the audience who had a chance to ‘virtually visit’ our beautiful province with a 360 view of a BC experience.
Kootenay Rockies Tourism was also represented at the Montana Governor’s Conference on Tourism & Recreation in Kalispell, MT . Wendy attended the conference representing the Crown of the Continent Geotourism Council who were featured in a key note presentation and a break out session at the conference. The Crown of the Continent covers southwest Alberta, southeast British Columbia and northwest Montana. Within the Crown are 2 national parks – Waterton (Canadian) & Glacier (USA) and a portion of the Kootenay Rockies region (the southeast corner of the region). The Geotourism project is supported by the National Geographic Society and both a MapGuide and website are available for consumers to assist with travel planning. One goal of the Geotourism Council is to encourage visitors to explore the gateway communities to the national parks while visiting the Crown of the Continent region.
