Visitor Market Profile – Travellers Overview

The Research, Planning and Evaluation department of the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation compiles and publishes data on BC’s tourism markets.

The publications discuss outbound travel, the size of the market, traveller characteristics (International Travel Survey and Travel Survey of Residents of Canada data), competition, market economic profile, and emerging trends.

The 2012 Market Profiles include: British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Rest of Canada, Washington, California, Mexico, Germany, United Kingdom, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

 

Here’s a sneak preview of the interesting facts:

  • In 2010, British Columbians took over 8 million overnight trips in BC, an increase of 9% from 2009 and an increase of 18% over 2006.

     

  • Alberta has the third largest economy in Canada, following Ontario and Quebec. The province’s economy has and continues to be powered by the energy industry.  Albertan’s have the highest wages in Canada and have a flat income tax of 10% and no provincial sales tax.

     

  • Nearly 60 million Americans travelled outside their country in 2011.  While 46% travelled to overseas destinations, over half of Americans travelled to their contiguous North American neighbours; 34% to Mexico and 20% to Canada.

     

  • Top countries to visit British Columbia in 2011 were, in consecutive order:  US, UK, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Hong Kong, Mexico, Philippines, India, Taiwan.
